Wildlife Wardens

Wildlife Warden Scheme – Ideford Parish

What Is the Wildlife Warden Scheme?

The Wildlife Warden Scheme is a volunteer-led community initiative designed to support and enhance wildlife and natural habitats in Ideford Parish. It forms part of a wider Action on Climate in Teignbridge (ACT) Wildlife Warden network, which encourages parishioners to take simple, positive actions to protect and promote biodiversity in their local area.

Our Purpose

Our Wildlife Wardens help make Ideford a healthier, greener and more wildlife-friendly place by: Supporting wildlife locally – encouraging residents to garden for nature, record sightings, and improve habitat quality. Surveying and monitoring nature – recording species, mapping habitats and identifying areas where wildlife could thrive. Engaging the community -sharing advice on wildlife gardening, working with local groups, and helping neighbours appreciate local nature. Advising on planning and development – keeping an eye on planning applications that might affect biodiversity and feeding back to the Parish Council where appropriate. Collaborating regionally – joining with Wildlife Wardens across Teignbridge to share ideas and take joint action.

Who Are Our Wildlife Wardens?

Ideford’s Wildlife Wardens are: Mr. Domic Morby and Mr Robin Aaronson who are local volunteers who care deeply about nature but do not need specialist qualifications to take part. They receive ongoing support and guidance as part of the larger ACT Wildlife Warden network.

Examples of Activities Wardens Undertake: These are typical projects and actions undertaken by wardens in Ideford

  • Advice on wildlife-friendly gardening (e.g., pollinator plants, ponds, pesticide-free practices).
  • Organising surveys and species counts to help understand what wildlife is present locally.
  • Helping residents enter wildlife award schemes and showcase their gardens and habitats.
  • Encouraging community involvement through events, talks, and practical habitat creation.
  • Reporting observations or issues to the Parish Council and relevant bodies to support better nature outcomes.

Why It Matters

Wildlife Wardens provide a valuable local voice for nature and help Ideford contribute positively to wider biodiversity goals. By supporting wildlife habitats, encouraging nature-friendly land use, and connecting people with nature, the scheme helps make our parish a better place for both wildlife and residents.
